But I don't know that. That's the opposite of before. It was important things or serious things. Now we have interesting things.
What can we do? We have to eat, we have to pain, we have to live. Of course, there are different ways to survive.
But it's my best option. I can't understand the arrogance of someone saying, 'I have created a big, important work.
Summary of Gerhard Richter Gerhard Richter is a German painter who originally trained in a realist style and later developed an appreciation for the more progressive work of his American and European contemporaries.
Accomplishments Richter has maintained a lifelong fascination for the power of images and painting's long, uneasy relationship with photography: while either medium may claim to reflect or express reality truthfully, either ultimately suggests only a partial, or incomplete view of a subject.
Richter borrows much of his painted imagery from newspapers, or even his own family albums. Often he begins by mechanically projecting such an image onto the canvas, a technique for thinking about how images often seem to have a life of their own, like mysterious ghosts haunting our psyche.
This act of visual compression, in which photography, projection, and painting merge to make a finished art work, suggests that all vision is a kind of conversion of the "real" into the "imaginary.
Such means for suggesting that something essential to the model has been "lost in translation" often leads a viewer's attention to the oil pigment's dense, material nature, thereby demonstrating both its expressive strengths and shortcomings.
In Richter's completely abstract canvases, personal emotion and all traces of the painter's autobiography seem missing.
The painting's many layers, strokes, and scrapes of color may thus appear as "beautiful" as anything found in nature that came into existence partly according to a predetermined structure such as DNA , as well as by way of unpredictable occasions of pure chance and the action of outside forces.

The film focused almost entirely on the world's highest paid living artist producing his large-scale abstract squeegee works in his studio.
In and Richter worked again with Corinna Belz on two films based on his book Patterns. The previous piece named Richters Patterns when shown is partnered with music by the German composer Marcus Schmickler , the later by the American composer Steve Reich , both performed by a live ensemble.
The later work in turn is part of a larger two-section collaboration, Reich Richter Pärt which was commissioned for the inaugural season at The Shed in the Hudson Yards development in Manhattan in New York City.

Richter was born in in Dresden, Germany. As a child, he experienced the bombing of Dresden by the Allied Forces in Afterward, he remembered roaming around and exploring the ruins.
Richter spent his early years under two oppressive regimes, the Third Reich and the communist government that ruled East Germany after World War II.
Between and , Richter studied painting at the Fine Arts Academy in Dresden , which mostly followed the principles of Social Realism.
In , only a few months before the erection of the Berlin Wall, Richter managed to defect to West Germany.
He continued his studies in Düsseldorf. There he met the artists Sigmar Polke , Konrad Lueg , Manfred Kuttner, and Blinky Palermo. In , together with Polke, Lueg, and Kuttner, Richter founded the Capitalist Realism group, whose works came to be known as German Pop Art.
During this period, Richter created paintings that were based on photographs he collected, such as Party and Women Descending the Staircase His collection of photographs would later develop into an archive of sorts that the artist called Atlas.
Like most of his photo-paintings, Party and Women Descending the Staircase have a photographic source that can be found in Atlas.
Towards the end of the s, Richter felt that he exhausted his photographic inspirations and began exploring an abstract style of painting.
Throughout the years, Richter periodically experimented with several kinds of abstraction: color chart paintings like colors , grey monochromes like Grey , and colorful, gestural abstracts like Abstract Painting No.
In the late s, Richter took on the controversial subject of the deaths of the leaders of the German terrorist group, Baader-Meinhof, in the series 18 Oktober The paintings were based on published photographs, to which he later applied different painterly effects that obscured the images, as in Funeral Richter never shied away from political subjects, although h e maintained that his paintings were not political statements.
In , Richter completed one of his most ambitious commissions, the Cologne Cathedral Window He based the design of the stained glass window on his color chart painting colors In , the 86 year old artist made headlines for donating 18 paintings to provide permanent accommodation for the homeless population in the German State of North Rhine-Westphali.
Richter has produced abstract as well as photorealistic paintings, and also photographs and glass pieces.
We see this clearly in Abstract Painting CR where there are several peeled-away sections. RACHEL: That is an interesting comparison.
I can see how you are reminded of the Pollock painting but to me they are so different. In Out of the Web there is a more gentle relationship between the peeled off elements and the dripped and splashed surrounding paint.
The overall effect is compositional harmony. In Abstract Painting CR the shapes are contra-compositional, they stand out and demand attention.
The main body of composition, as with the other Richter works, is made using the squeegee technique. Again the effect of peeling off or gouging out shapes in this fluid multilayer flat bed of paint creates a multi-dimensional composition.
The surface appears to move at rapid speed right to left, perhaps in the direction of the squeegee application. The effect of these rough-edged and deeply gouged shapes, comprising the exposed dark blue and red paint of under-layers, make them static independent elements against the backdrop of a storm of rapidly moving red paint.
To me, Richter has achieved in paint an effect similar to what sophisticated special effects achieve in film.
The effect created by Pollock is, to me, more lyrical. Abstract Painting is again a larger scale work and the gouged, scraped or peeled off marks are also in larger scale.
His techniques are tried, tested and versatile. As I said previously I think Richter leaves his paint to dry in between different layer applications.
Sometimes that is because he wants to muse over his composition, refresh himself or his idea and perhaps re-work it or possibly because he knows its necessary to do so in order to create his desired surface effects.
We have already established that he knows paint and how to manipulate it. I think he paints a relatively thin underlayer which will dry relatively quickly, probably leaves it for a week or two, applies another thicker layer, leaves it for a few days until touch-dry but still relatively plastic and then cuts out a shape with a knife.
He then carefully peels off the plastic-like thicker cut-out oil paint shape.
